Why Costs Vary So Much
The most common question I get from brands is: "How much does a 3D billboard cost?" The honest answer is that it depends on three things — how complex the animation is, which screen you want, and how long you want it running. A simple product reveal on a single screen is a different project than a fully simulated fluid animation across multiple locations — like the Cadbury campaign, which involved six fluid simulation passes and three screen formats.
Below is a realistic breakdown based on projects I've delivered for clients like Cadbury, ALDO, and Dubai Safari Park.
Cost Breakdown — content vs. media
| Category | Range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Content Creation | $5K – $50K+ | 3D modeling, animation, fluid/physics simulations, anamorphic perspective mapping, rendering, compositing, mock-ups, and revision rounds. |
| Media Placement | $10K+ /week | Billboard rental, prime location fees (Dubai, Riyadh), display duration, technical setup, calibration, multi-screen packages, campaign reporting. |
What drives content costs up or down
Not every 3D billboard needs the same level of production. Here's what actually moves the price:
Production workflow
This is the typical process I follow for every 3D billboard production. Timelines vary, but the steps are the same.
Client brief & screen specs
1–2 daysDefine goals, audience, and screen specifications. We get exact dimensions, resolution, and viewing angles for the target billboard.
Reference & moodboards
2–3 daysGather brand guidelines, visual references, and competitive examples. This sets the creative direction before any 3D work begins.
Concept & storyboard
3–5 daysDesign the animation sequence, camera angles, and the anamorphic 'pop-out' moments. You approve the concept before we model anything.
3D modeling & animation
7–14 daysBuild 3D assets, rig characters or products, and animate the full sequence. Simulations (fluid, cloth, particles) happen here.
Anamorphic mapping & rendering
3–5 daysMap the animation to the screen's exact perspective. Render from both the viewer's 'sweet spot' camera and the flat screen camera.
Client review & revisions
2–5 daysYou see the final render with a mock-up of how it looks on the actual screen. Typically 1–2 revision rounds are included.
Final delivery
1 dayDeliver the final files in the exact format and resolution required by the billboard operator. Ready for deployment.
Technical realities that affect budget
These are the constraints most brands don't think about until they're mid-production. Understanding them upfront prevents surprises.
Real projects, real numbers
Three campaigns I produced, with context on what each involved:
Chocolate Flow Billboard
6 fluid simulations, 3 screen formats (Roxy, Giga, City Walk), chocolate and milk flow physics with branded bar reveal.
ALDORamadan 2024 Collection
Luxury product showcase with floating bag and heels. Clean, elegant animation with fabric textures and cultural sensitivity for the Ramadan season.
Dubai Safari ParkGorilla 3D Billboard
Anatomically accurate gorilla character breaking through the screen. Detailed 3D modeling from real park footage and reference-matched animation.
Common concerns & how to address them
"It's too expensive for our budget"
Content creation starts from $5K for simpler product animations. The biggest cost is usually media placement, not the 3D production itself. Content can also be repurposed for social media, stretching your investment further.
"We don't know if it will work on our screen"
We check your billboard specs before starting. Every animation is built for your specific screen dimensions, resolution, and viewing angles. You see a mock-up before we start full production.
"The process seems complicated"
It's 3 steps from your side: send a brief, approve the concept, approve the final render. We handle all the technical complexity — anamorphic mapping, simulations, screen calibration.
"We need it fast"
Standard production is 4–6 weeks. Rush delivery is possible in 2–3 weeks with priority scheduling. The earlier you start, the more options you have.
